The study was underpinned by two theoretical models for the evaluation of training. The case studies aimed to understand the features and contextual factors associated with good practice regarding the design, delivery and implementation of dementia education and training and its impact on care practices. We employed an embedded [ 23 ], collective [ 19 ] case study design. Eighteen social care providers in England and Scotland, including fourteen care home providers and four domiciliary care organisations who had responded to the audit were considered for inclusion.
They were shortlisted using a positive deviance approach [ 24 ] by researchers blinded to site identity, and case study lack of training ranked against a set of good practice criteria.
